Punjab's alcohol bonanza: Significant price reductions on imported spirits

Good news for fans of imported foreign spirits (IFL): rates in Punjab are expected to drop in the next fiscal year, 2024–2025. The Punjab Cabinet announced this as part of the new excise policy. Punjab Made Liquor (PML) would continue to be priced the same.

A government representative stated that they anticipate a Rs 100–200 decrease in the price of each IFL bottle. They clarified that IFL was previously being trafficked from nearby states like Chandigarh and Haryana because the costs were lower there. Their aim is to increase sales by making changes to the charge structure, which had been minimal.

For the fiscal year 2024–25, the government hopes to raise revenue by Rs 621.95 crore, or Rs 10,145.95 crore. For the first time in the state's history, revenue predictions have exceeded five figures. The official made it clear that the cost of domestically produced alcohol will not alter because it is crucial for rural communities and greatly increases state revenue.

Instead of using a tendering process, vends will now be distributed through a draw of lots in order to draw in more people. Furthermore, modifications to licence costs and security levels are intended to promote broader participation and lessen the initial financial strain on shops. All licence holders must now abide by safety standards.

A system for getting rid of discarded spirits bottles in marriage palaces has been implemented in an effort to combat counterfeit alcohol. Bar licence holders must also post notices encouraging responsible drinking and offer instruments for measuring alcohol consumption.

The government's dedication to bolstering the alcohol sector while guaranteeing consumer safety and boosting revenue is demonstrated by these regulation measures.
