Embracing Rural Women: Dispelling Preconceptions

Amidst the farms and fields in the lovely rural Punjab, there is a group of extraordinary women defying long-standing preconceptions. On this International Women's Day, we honour their success stories and tales of resiliency, showing how they overcame challenges to follow their ambitions.

Known as the pillar of her family, Harjinder experienced tragedy at a young age when her father and brothers passed away. When she was given the task of overseeing their five-acre farm, she accepted the challenge and used both contemporary and sustainable farming practices to boost output. Harjinder's perseverance is evident despite the obstacles she faces, as she works diligently in the fields and earns Rs 7 lakh a year.

Despite having just completed eighth grade, Karamjit Kaur dared to dream bigger than society would have her. After participating in a training course on millet-based goods, she quickly launched her own company. Her bravery paid off because she is now able to demonstrate that age is not a barrier to entrepreneurship by selling a variety of millet treats.

The tale of Sukhpal demonstrates adaptability and resiliency. She took over their beekeeping business after her husband became ill, and over time, they greatly increased its size. Sukhpal's proficiency in beekeeping currently brings in an annual income of Rs 7 lakh, demonstrating her unwavering will to succeed in spite of obstacles.

The journey of Sarabjeet is proof of the strength of desire and tenacity. She has never stopped learning and developing, from her start as a physical training assistant to her current position supporting organic farming. In addition to gaining notoriety, Sarabjeet's culinary prowess with millets has given her a platform to uplift other women in her neighbourhood.

These courageous and tenacious ladies from rural Punjab inspire us. Their experiences serve as a reminder that everything is achievable with dedication and hard work, and that success transcends age and gender. Let's recognise their accomplishments and encourage the empowerment of women everywhere as we commemorate International Women's Day. Because of their tenacity, everyone has hope for a better future.
