Punjab and Haryana High Court to Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim: "Surrender by March 10"

Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to surrender by March 10 and to refrain from considering any more parole pleas without the court's approval. This ruling is in response to a petition filed by the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), which contested Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's parole.

These orders were made by the division bench of Acting Chief Justice G S Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji. The bench also directed Haryana to furnish an affidavit outlining the paroles that had been given to prisoners convicted of comparable offences inside the state. As per the confirmation of SGPC counsel P S Hundal, these directions were communicated verbally throughout the hearings.

For additional procedures, the case has been postponed until March 11. An SGPC member named Bhagwant Singh Sialka submitted a plea on January 20, 2023, claiming that the divisional commissioner of Rohtak had awarded Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh parole in contravention of The Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act 2022.

Sialka expressed worries that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's parole activities and possible influence may provoke violence, especially within the Sikh community. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh adhered to the terms of his 40-day release, surrendered on schedule, and there were no documented disruptions to peace and order, according to Haryana, which supported the parole. The Punjabi government, however, voiced worries over possible unrest brought on by the parole.
