Between 2017 and 21, the assets of a Chandigarh Police couple under investigation by the CBI "rose from Rs 13 lakh to nearly Rs 2 crore."

According to the CBI's FIR, the assets of the Chandigarh police couple, Harinder Singh and Paramjit Kaur Sekhon, increased from Rs 13.22 lakh to Rs 1.85 crore between 2017 and 2021.

The FIR states that during this time, the couple purchased a residential plot in Mullanpur Garibdass New Chandigarh valued at Rs 40.56 lakh, jewellery worth Rs 4,50,000, and household items valued at Rs 5 lakh, in addition to a 20% share in a large house in Sector 36, Chandigarh, valued at Rs 1.28 crore.

According to the FIR, Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon spent only Rs 10 lakh, or at least one-third of his gross income of Rs 50 lakh, which he received between 2017 and 2021, on kitchen items at his Sector-36 home.A salary of Rs 50 lakh, a home loan of Rs 65 lakh in Harinder Sekhon's name, a transfer of Rs 15 lakh from SBI to Paramjit Kaur Sekhon's HDFC bank account, two unidentified checks for Rs 7 lakh in Harinder Sekhon's account, and a credit of Rs 16.44 lakh from the Accountant General were among the couple's acknowledged sources of income between 2017 and 2021.

The FIR details the expenditures of the couple, which totaled Rs 1.58 crore. These expenses included payments of Rs 11.14 lakh to SBI Home Loan from Paramjit Kaur Sekhon's account, Rs 17.50 lakh to two men named Ashwani Nagpal and Sanjeev Sambher, and Rs 41.42 lakh to various individuals who were waiting on checks for verification. When Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon was questioned in August 2023 over a bribery case involving three individuals, including police constable Pawan Kumar and Manish Dubey, the brother of local BJP leader Anil Dubey, the CBI became aware of him. It was discovered that he and his spouse, Inspector Paramjit Kaur Sekhon, accumulated assets that were out of proportion to their reported income sources. An investigation was carried out, and the pair was found guilty of a crime, according to a top CBI officer.

In October 1997, Harinder Singh Sekhon became an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with the Chandigarh Police. In 2005, he was elevated to the position of sub-inspector (SI), and in 2015, to inspector. He is currently assigned to the security wing. Harinder Singh Sekhon's batchmate is Inspector Paramjit Kaur Sekhon. She works with the traffic police in Utah.
