Admin launches investigation after finding numerous dead fish in Sukhna Lake.

Following the discovery of numerous dead fish at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh on Monday, teams from the UT departments of Wildlife and Animal Husbandry and Fisheries began their investigations. The dead fish were discovered in the area of the lake between the Regulatory Ends and the Suicide Point. Locals were concerned because there were a lot more dead fish this year than there had been in the past; some even remembered dead tortoises from the previous year.

The director of the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department, Dr. Kanwardeep Singh, has not discounted the likelihood that dead fish have been purposefully dumped into the lake. While fish mortality is not unusual, he pointed out that it becomes alarming when it occurs during times of steady water levels. Fish deaths can be caused by a variety of factors, including increasing rainfall that raises water levels and sedimentation that lowers oxygen levels. There have been reports of people tossing dead fish into the lake, which prompted the authorities to look into the matter more in order to ascertain the precise reason for the deaths that have occurred recently.

The UT Chief Wildlife Warden, TC Nautiyal, announced that inquiries into the situation are still underway.
